Renting a Car in Morocco: Documents, Age and Requirements

Passport, driving licence and car keys laid on a table in a Marrakech riad before a road trip

The main requirements for renting a car in Morocco are a valid passport, a driving licence usually held for at least 2 years, a minimum age that is usually 21, and a security deposit. An International Driving Permit is recommended, and required in practice if your licence is not in French or a Latin-alphabet format that police can read easily.

Requirements for renting a car in Morocco: the documents

Whatever agency you choose, have these ready at pickup:

  • Passport (or a national ID card for Moroccan residents). The agency will usually copy it for the contract.
  • Driving licence in its original, physical form. Photos or scans are generally not accepted.
  • International Driving Permit (IDP), recommended for everyone and strongly advised for licences from outside Europe.
  • Booking confirmation, on your phone is fine.
  • Means of paying the deposit, as agreed with the agency.

We cover the IDP question in depth in our guide to the International Driving Permit in Morocco.

Age and driving experience

Each agency sets its own rules, so always ask. The most common conditions are:

ConditionUsual rule
Minimum ageUsually 21
Licence held forUsually at least 2 years
Luxury cars and large 4x4sOften a higher minimum age and more experience
Additional driverMust meet the same conditions and be named on the contract

If you are under the usual limit, contact the agency before booking rather than hoping it will be fine on the day. Some can make arrangements for certain categories; others cannot.

Is my licence accepted in Morocco?

For tourists, licences from the EU, the UK and Switzerland are generally accepted for short stays. Many other licences are too, particularly when accompanied by an IDP, which translates your licence into several languages. If your licence is in a non-Latin script, the IDP becomes essential.

Carry the licence (and IDP) with you every time you drive. Police checkpoints are common on Moroccan roads and officers will ask for your papers along with the car's documents.

Deposit and payment

Almost every rental in Morocco involves a security deposit. It covers the insurance excess and things like fuel or late return. There are two common ways it is handled:

  • Card hold: an amount is blocked on a credit card and released after the return.
  • Cash deposit: some local agencies accept a cash deposit, returned when you bring the car back in the same condition.

The amount depends on the car category: modest for an economy car, much higher for a luxury SUV. Ask for the exact figure in writing when you book, along with the excess amount. To understand how excess and cover interact, read car rental insurance in Morocco explained.

What the car should come with

By law and good practice, a rental car in Morocco should have its registration document (carte grise) or a copy, a valid insurance certificate, and a vehicle inspection certificate where applicable. These papers usually sit in the glovebox. Check they are there before driving away, because police may ask for them at a checkpoint.

You should also find a spare wheel, a jack and a warning triangle. Wearing seatbelts is compulsory in the front and rear seats, and children should travel in a suitable child seat, which you can request when booking.

Other rules worth knowing before you sign

  • Crossing borders: rental cars generally cannot leave Morocco, and taking a car on the ferry to Spain is normally not allowed.
  • Off-road driving: contracts often exclude damage caused off tarmac, except with vehicles and cover that allow it.
  • Alcohol: tolerance is practically zero. Do not drink and drive at all.
  • Traffic fines: the driver is responsible for fines during the rental.

Once your paperwork is sorted, the next step is the pickup itself; here is how pickup at Marrakech airport works.
