Marrakech Airport Car Rental: How Pickup at RAK Works
Marrakech airport car rental with a local agency usually works as a meet-and-greet: an agent waits for you in the arrivals hall at Marrakech-Menara (RAK) with a name sign, walks you to the car park and hands over the keys after a quick check of the car and your documents. It takes around 15–20 minutes, and you can be on the road to your riad or hotel straight away.
How Marrakech airport car rental works with us
Big international brands have desks inside the terminal, but many local agencies, including ours, work differently: we bring the car to you. When you book, you give us your flight number and arrival time. We follow the flight, so if you land early or late, the agent adjusts. Once you are through passport control and have your luggage, you walk out into the arrivals hall and look for the person holding a sign with your name.
From there it is a short walk to the airport car park, where the car is waiting. There are no shuttle buses and no queue at a counter, which is honestly one of the nicest things about arriving in Marrakech this way.
Step by step
- Book online or on WhatsApp and share your flight details.
- Receive a confirmation with the agent's contact number.
- Clear passport control and customs (this can take anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour at busy times).
- Meet your agent in arrivals, walk to the car together.
- Check the car, sign the contract, take the keys.
Documents to have ready at the airport
Keep these in your hand luggage, not in the suitcase:
- Your passport.
- Your driving licence (usually held for at least 2 years).
- An International Driving Permit if your licence is not from the EU, UK or Switzerland, and recommended in any case.
- The card or cash for the security deposit, depending on what was agreed.
For the full details on age limits and licences, read our guide to the requirements for renting a car in Morocco.
The vehicle check: five minutes that save headaches
Before you drive away, walk around the car with the agent. We always encourage clients to take photos or a short video on their phone. Look at:
- Scratches and dents on the bodywork and bumpers, all noted on the check-out sheet.
- Tyres, including the spare, and the presence of the jack and warning triangle.
- The fuel level, which should match what is written on the contract.
- Air conditioning, which you will want to test before leaving, especially from May to September.
Ask the agent anything that is unclear: how the deposit is returned, what the insurance covers, what number to call in case of a breakdown. A good agency is happy to answer.
Late-night and early-morning flights
Plenty of flights land in Marrakech late in the evening. With a meet-and-greet service, that is not a problem: we deliver at the time of your flight, including at night, as long as it is arranged in advance. Just keep your phone on after landing, with WhatsApp working if possible, so the agent can reach you if your flight is delayed or the queue at passport control is long.
If you arrive at night, the drive from the airport to the city centre is short (roughly 15–25 minutes to Gueliz or the medina edges), but remember that you cannot drive into the heart of the medina. Plan where you will park near your riad; our article on driving in Marrakech for the first time will help.
Returning the car at RAK
Return works the same way in reverse. We agree a time, usually around two and a half to three hours before your flight, and meet you in the departures car park. We check the car together, confirm the fuel level and close the contract. The deposit is then released as agreed.
Leave yourself a little extra time: the security check at the terminal entrance and at check-in can be slow in peak season.
Choosing the right car for an airport pickup
If you are staying in the city and doing a couple of day trips, a compact car like the Renault Clio 5 or the Dacia Logan is easy to park and cheap to run. Families with big suitcases will be more comfortable in a Dacia Duster or a 7-seat van. You can compare every model and its starting price on our full rental fleet, and if price is your main concern, see how to get a cheap car rental in Marrakech without surprises.
| Trip type | Suggested car | From (per day) |
|---|---|---|
| City and short trips, 1–2 people | Dacia Logan / Renault Clio 5 | 250–300 MAD |
| Family with luggage, mountain roads | Dacia Duster | 400 MAD |
| Group of 5–7 | Kia Carnival | 1,400 MAD |
Prices are indicative "from" rates and vary with season and rental length.
