Do You Need an International Driving Permit in Morocco?

International Driving Permit booklet and a foreign driving licence on the dashboard of a rental car in Morocco

An international driving permit in Morocco is not always strictly required: tourists with EU, UK or Swiss licences are generally accepted on their national licence for short stays. However, an IDP is recommended for everyone and becomes essential if your licence is from further afield or is not written in the Latin alphabet. It is cheap, quick to get and removes any doubt at a checkpoint.

What an International Driving Permit actually is

An IDP is not a licence on its own. It is a small booklet that translates your national licence into several languages, including French, which is widely used in Moroccan administration. It is only valid together with your original licence, so you must carry both.

IDPs are issued in your home country, not in Morocco. You cannot obtain one after you arrive, so sort it out before your trip.

USA, Canada, Australia and other Latin-alphabet licencesOften accepted, but an IDP is strongly recommended.

Rules and their interpretation can change, so if you are in doubt, check with your home licensing authority or your embassy before you travel. Rental agencies also set their own conditions, which you will find in our guide to the requirements for renting a car in Morocco.

Why we recommend carrying one anyway

Even when your licence is accepted, the IDP makes life easier in three situations:

  • Police checkpoints: officers see many licence formats. A French-language translation speeds things up and avoids misunderstandings.
  • An accident or insurance claim: a clear, translated document helps when a report has to be written.
  • Different interpretations: one officer or one agency may be stricter than another. With an IDP, the question simply does not come up.

Checkpoints are a normal part of driving here; we explain how they work in what to expect at police checkpoints in Morocco.

How to get an IDP before your trip

The process depends on your country, but it is usually simple:

  1. Find the issuing body: often a motoring association, post office or licensing authority.
  2. Prepare your licence, a passport photo and ID.
  3. Apply in person or online and pay a small fee.
  4. Allow time: some countries issue it on the spot, others take several days or weeks by post.

Check which convention version your IDP follows and how long it is valid. Make sure it covers the whole period of your trip.

Documents to carry every time you drive

  • Your original driving licence.
  • Your IDP, if you have one.
  • Your passport, or at least a copy (we recommend keeping the original with you on the road).
  • The rental contract and the car's papers, which stay in the glovebox.

Keep them together in a pouch so you can hand them over calmly if you are stopped. Having everything in order is also one of the simplest ways to feel confident behind the wheel; for the bigger picture, read our honest guide to driving safely in Morocco.

Common questions

Can I rent a car without an IDP?

Usually yes with an EU, UK or Swiss licence. With other licences, many agencies still accept you, but ask first.

Is a photo of my licence enough?

No. Bring the physical card. Agencies and police expect the original.

Does the IDP change the minimum age or experience rules?

No. The agency's conditions, usually minimum age 21 and 2 years of licence, still apply.
