The best places to visit near Marrakech by car range from the Agafay desert, just 40 km away, to Essaouira and Aït Benhaddou at around 190 km. With your own wheels you can reach mountain valleys, a lake, waterfalls and the Atlantic coast in a day, and choose your own timing instead of following a tour bus.

Agafay desert

Not a sand desert but a lunar landscape of stony hills, Agafay is perfect for a late afternoon drive and a sunset dinner at one of the camps. The main roads are paved; the last tracks to some camps are gravel, which most cars handle slowly in dry weather. Ask your camp about access before you go.

Lalla Takerkoust

This reservoir, with the Atlas as a backdrop, is a peaceful spot for lunch by the water. Combine it with Agafay for an easy half-day loop. In spring the surrounding fields turn green and the snow on the peaks makes a striking contrast with the water, while in summer the lake is a popular spot for locals escaping the city heat, so weekdays are quieter. A few restaurants and guesthouses along the shore serve tagines and grilled dishes with a view, making it a lovely place to slow down after a busy morning in the souks.

In the High Atlas: 1 to 1.5 hours

The Ourika Valley, Imlil and Oukaïmeden give you cool air, Berber villages and great walks. All are reachable on paved roads, though the final stretches are winding. We describe routes and timings in detail in our Atlas Mountains day trip by car guide. Oukaïmeden sits high up and can get snow in winter, so check conditions before driving there in the colder months.

Further afield: Ouzoud, Essaouira and Aït Benhaddou

A longer day: Ouzoud Falls

North-east of Marrakech, the Ouzoud Falls tumble over 100 metres into a green gorge, with olive trees, rainbows in the spray and often Barbary macaques along the paths. The drive takes around three hours each way through farmland and small towns, so leave early and allow a full day. Park at the top, walk down to the base and take your time; it is a beautiful, easy hike.

Worth an overnight: Essaouira and Aït Benhaddou

Both can be done as long day trips, but they are far more enjoyable with a night on the spot.

  • Essaouira, about 190 km west, is a relaxed, windswept port with blue boats, whitewashed ramparts and fresh grilled fish. From there you can continue down the coast, as in our guide to driving from Marrakech to Agadir.
  • Aït Benhaddou lies on the other side of the High Atlas, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Our article on the Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou drive covers the best stops.

If you want to link several of these into one journey, see our 10-day Morocco road trip itinerary.

Tips for day trips from Marrakech

  • Leave early to beat both heat and traffic, and plan to be back before dark.
  • Carry cash for parking attendants, small cafés and local guides.
  • Download offline maps; mobile signal can drop in mountain valleys.
  • Stay within village speed limits, where checkpoints are common.

The right car for day trips

For Agafay and the Atlas valleys, the Dacia Duster gives extra ground clearance for gravel access roads. For Essaouira and motorway-heavy days, a comfortable compact like the Hyundai Accent keeps fuel costs down. See all options on our fleet page.
