Driving from Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou: Route and Stops
The Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou drive covers about 190 km and takes around 3 hours 45 minutes on the N9, crossing the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass at about 2,260 m. The road is paved all the way and suitable for any car, but it is winding, so plan a full day with stops or, better, stay overnight.

The best stops on the Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou drive
Taddert
The last sizeable village before the high section is a classic breakfast or tea stop. Grilled meat and tagines are cooked by the roadside, and it is a good place to stretch before the hairpins.
Tizi n'Tichka viewpoint
At the top of the pass, a small plateau with cafés and fossil stalls gives wide views over both sides of the Atlas. It can be cold and windy even in spring, so bring a layer.
Telouet (optional detour)
Just after the pass, a side road leads to Telouet and the partly ruined kasbah of the Glaoui family, with beautiful painted interiors. Allow at least an extra 1.5–2 hours for the detour and visit. The side road is paved but narrow in places, so take it slowly.
Aït Benhaddou
The fortified village (ksar) is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a famous film location. Park in one of the car parks on the new-village side, cross the riverbed on foot and climb to the granary at the top for the view. Late afternoon light is the most beautiful.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip is possible, but it means more than 7 hours of mountain driving in a single day. We usually recommend an overnight stay in Aït Benhaddou or nearby Ouarzazate, which lets you enjoy sunset and sunrise over the ksar and drive back rested. It also makes a perfect first night of a longer loop: our 10-day Morocco road trip itinerary starts exactly this way.
Driving tips for the N9
- Leave early, ideally before 8 am, to avoid slow trucks on the climb and to arrive with plenty of daylight.
- Do not overtake on blind bends; wait for the marked overtaking stretches.
- Use a lower gear on the descent to spare your brakes.
- Watch the village limits: 100 km/h can drop to 60 or 40, and checkpoints are common. See our guide to police checkpoints in Morocco.
- Check the weather in winter. Snow occasionally closes the pass for a few hours; ask locally or message us before setting off.
- Fill up before leaving Marrakech; stations exist on the way but are further apart in the mountains.
Which car suits this road?
The road is fully paved, so a 4x4 is not necessary. A comfortable car with a bit of power makes the climbs more pleasant: the Volkswagen Golf 8 is great for couples, while the Dacia Duster or Peugeot 3008 give higher seating and more space for luggage. If you plan to continue to the desert and its sandy tracks, our 4x4s are worth considering. See all our cars.
