Atlas Mountains Day Trip by Car from Marrakech
An Atlas Mountains day trip by car is the easiest way to swap Marrakech's heat and bustle for green valleys, Berber villages and cool mountain air. The two classic destinations, the Ourika Valley (Setti Fatma) and Imlil, are each about 65 km from the city, roughly 1.5 hours' drive, and both can be done comfortably in a day at your own pace.
Why do the Atlas by car?
Organised tours follow a fixed schedule and often stop at the same shops. With your own car you choose where to stop, when to eat and how long to walk. You can leave early to beat the crowds, linger at a viewpoint, or combine two valleys in one day. The roads are paved, and no 4x4 is needed for the routes below.
Three classic Atlas Mountains day trips by car
Option 1: Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma
- Distance: about 65 km from Marrakech
- Drive time: around 1h15–1h30
- Highlights: riverside cafés, the waterfalls above Setti Fatma, the Saturday souk in Tnine Ourika
The road follows the Ourika river as the valley narrows. At Setti Fatma, park in one of the car parks at the entrance to the village; local guides will offer to take you up to the waterfalls. The walk is short but rocky, so wear good shoes. Weekends and summer are busy, so an early start pays off.
Option 2: Asni and Imlil, gateway to Toubkal
- Distance: about 65 km
- Drive time: around 1h30
- Highlights: the Saturday market in Asni, walnut groves, walks towards the villages of Aroumd and beyond
Take the road south through Tahanaout and Asni. The last stretch up to Imlil is narrower with some bends; drive slowly and give way to minibuses. In Imlil, use the paid parking area at the entrance to the village and explore on foot. Even a two-hour walk gives magnificent views of the High Atlas.
Option 3: Lalla Takerkoust lake and the Agafay plateau
For a gentler day, drive about 40 km south-west to the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir, with the Atlas as a backdrop, then return via the stony Agafay plateau. It is perfect for a lunch by the water and a sunset over the "desert" of Agafay. Find more ideas in our list of places to visit near Marrakech by car.

Mountain driving tips
- Keep to your side on bends and sound your horn briefly before blind corners on narrow roads.
- Use engine braking on long descents.
- Check the weather after heavy rain or in winter: rivers can rise quickly in the Ourika Valley, so follow local advice.
- Drive back before dark; mountain roads are unlit and you may meet animals.
- Respect village speed limits (often 40 or 60 km/h) and watch for children.
If you want to go further and cross the range, the drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass is described in our guide to the Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou drive, which also works as the first leg of a 10-day Morocco road trip.
Which car for an Atlas day trip?
A small car handles these roads fine, but a little extra height and power make the climbs more relaxing. The Dacia Duster is our most popular choice for the mountains, and the Hyundai Tucson adds comfort for families. Couples on a budget are happy with a Toyota Yaris.
