Marrakech to Agadir by Car: Motorway Route and Coastal Detour
Driving from Marrakech to Agadir by car takes about 3 hours for roughly 250 km on the A7 motorway, a smooth toll road that crosses the western High Atlas. If you have more time, a coastal detour via Essaouira turns the trip into a memorable day or two along the Atlantic.
Option 1: the A7 motorway (fastest)
The motorway is the obvious choice if you want to reach Agadir quickly. From Marrakech, follow signs for the A7 south-west; the road climbs gently through the hills around Chichaoua, crosses the Atlas foothills with some long, sweeping gradients and then descends towards the Souss plain and Agadir.
- Distance: about 250 km
- Driving time: around 3 hours without long stops
- Speed limit: 120 km/h, with lower limits signed on some mountain sections
- Services: rest areas with fuel, cafés and toilets along the way
The mountain section can be windy, and in rare winter conditions there may be fog or rain on the higher parts. Keep a steady speed and give trucks plenty of room on the climbs.
Tolls on the Marrakech to Agadir motorway
The A7 is managed by ADM and you pay at toll booths. You can pay in cash (dirhams) or with a Jawaz electronic badge if your car has one. Toll rates change over time, so check the current price at the booth or on the ADM website; for a standard car it is a moderate amount, not a major part of your trip budget. Our guide to driving from Marrakech to Casablanca explains how the booths work in more detail. Keep some small notes handy to avoid waiting for change.
Option 2: the coastal detour via Essaouira
If you have a spare day, this is the route we love. Drive Marrakech to Essaouira first (about 190 km, around 2h45 on the N8/R207), spend the night, then follow the coast south to Agadir on the N1.
| Leg | Approx. distance | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Marrakech – Essaouira | 190 km | 2h45 |
| Essaouira – Agadir (coast road) | about 175 km | about 3h, more with stops |
The coast road winds through argan forests, over headlands and past small surf villages. Highlights include:
- Sidi Kaouki, a windswept beach just south of Essaouira.
- Imsouane, a fishing village with one of the longest waves in Morocco and simple fish lunches.
- Tamri and Taghazout, where the banana plantations meet the surf spots just north of Agadir.
You might see goats in argan trees along the way; they are real, though often posed for photos, so be respectful if someone asks for a tip. Distances between fuel stations are longer on this route, so fill up in Essaouira.
Tips for a smooth drive
- Leave early in summer to avoid the midday heat inland.
- Respect village limits on the coast road: 100 km/h drops quickly to 60 or 40, with regular speed checks.
- Avoid night driving on the N1, which is unlit and hilly in parts.
- Use offline maps for the coastal section, where mobile data can be patchy.
