Where to Stay in Marrakech When You Have a Rental Car
Wondering where to stay in Marrakech with a car? The easiest areas are Gueliz, Hivernage and the Palmeraie, where most hotels have parking and direct access to the main roads. A riad in the medina is still possible, but you will park outside the walls and walk the last few hundred metres with your luggage, so choose one close to a gate and a guarded car park.
The quick answer by area
| Area | Parking | Atmosphere | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medina | Outside the walls, guarded car parks | Historic, lively, atmospheric | Culture lovers happy to walk |
| Gueliz | Hotel garages and street parking | Modern, cafés, shops | Practical city base |
| Hivernage | Usually on-site | Upscale, quiet, close to the medina | Comfort with easy access |
| Palmeraie | Easy, private | Resorts, pools, calm | Families, relaxation |
| Agafay / Ourika road | Easy | Countryside, views | Nature, day trips |
Staying in the medina with a car
Most riads are in narrow lanes where cars cannot enter. That does not mean you should avoid them, just plan ahead:
- Ask your riad which gate (bab) and car park is closest. Many work with a porter who brings a handcart for your bags.
- Choose a riad near a gate such as Bab Doukkala, Bab Ksour, Bab Agnaou or near Koutoubia, where guarded car parks are within a short walk.
- Pay the attendant the local rate; ask the price when you arrive, as it varies by car park and length of stay.
- Keep the car for day trips and explore the medina on foot.
Our guide to driving in Marrakech explains how to reach the medina gates without getting stuck in the busiest streets.
Gueliz and Hivernage: the practical choice
The new town is built for cars. Gueliz has wide avenues, supermarkets, restaurants and many hotels with garages or reserved spaces. Hivernage, between Gueliz and the medina, is calmer and home to many upscale hotels with on-site parking. From both, you can walk or take a short taxi ride to Jemaa el-Fna in the evening, and reach the motorway to Casablanca or Agadir in minutes.
Gueliz is also a very convenient base if you are arriving by train, since the station is right next door, and if you plan several day trips in different directions. You are close to fuel stations, large supermarkets for picnic supplies and pharmacies, and leaving town in the morning is quicker than from the medina. The trade-off is a less romantic atmosphere: you swap courtyard fountains for modern rooms and city views. Many visitors split their stay, spending a few nights in a riad without using the car, then moving to Gueliz or the Palmeraie for the road-trip part of the holiday.
The Palmeraie and the outskirts
The Palmeraie, north-east of the centre, is a palm grove dotted with resorts, villas and guesthouses with pools and gardens. Parking is easy and private, making it ideal for families. The trade-off is that you will drive (or take a taxi) into town. Further out, lodges on the Agafay plateau or along the Ourika road give you peace and quiet, and put you closer to the Atlas Mountains for a day trip by car.
Questions to ask before you book accommodation
- Is parking on-site, and is it free or paid?
- If not, where is the nearest guarded car park and how far is the walk?
- Is there a porter for luggage (for riads)?
- Is the access road suitable for a larger vehicle, such as a van or SUV?
- Can the rental car be delivered directly to the accommodation?
Match the car to where you sleep
If you stay in the medina or central Gueliz, a compact car such as the Fiat 500 or Renault Clio 5 is much easier to park. Families staying in the Palmeraie have more freedom to choose a larger model like the Kia Carnival. Compare sizes on our fleet page.
