Automatic Car Rental in Marrakech: Availability and Tips

Red earth valley in the High Atlas near Marrakech

Automatic car rental in Marrakech is possible, but automatics are far less common than manuals in Morocco, so you should book early and confirm the gearbox in writing. They are easier to find in the mid-range and premium categories (compact hatchbacks, SUVs, luxury cars and vans) than among the cheapest economy models.

Why automatics are rarer in Morocco

Most cars on Moroccan roads have a manual gearbox. Manual versions are cheaper to buy, cheaper to repair and familiar to local drivers. Rental fleets reflect that: the typical budget car is a manual diesel. Automatics exist in every serious fleet, but in smaller numbers, and they tend to be booked first by travellers from countries where driving a manual is unusual.

The practical consequence is simple: if you can only drive an automatic, do not leave it to the last minute, and do not assume "or similar" means the same transmission.

The Volkswagen Golf 8 is a comfortable option if you want a compact car that is pleasant on the motorway, and the Peugeot 3008 suits families heading into the mountains. How to secure an automatic

  • Book as early as you can, especially for Christmas, Easter and summer.
  • Write "automatic" clearly in your request and ask for confirmation of the specific model.
  • Be flexible on the model, not on the gearbox. A different car in the same category is fine; a manual is not if you cannot drive one.
  • Double-check at handover before you sign anything.
  • Consider the pickup point: we deliver at the airport, your hotel or riad, Gueliz or the train station, so you only drive the car once you have seen it is the right one.

What it costs

There is no fixed "automatic supplement" with us: the price is simply the rate of the car you rent, which you can see on each model's page.

Because automatics sit mostly in higher categories, the daily price is usually above that of a basic manual. Expect to pay more than for a Dacia Logan, but you gain comfort, and in Marrakech traffic that comfort is real. If budget is tight and you can drive a manual, our article on cheap car rental in Marrakech shows how to keep costs down.

Driving an automatic in Morocco

In Marrakech

This is where an automatic shines. Roundabouts, scooters, horse-drawn carriages and stop-start traffic around Bab Doukkala or Jemaa el-Fna are much less tiring when you are not working a clutch. Our practical tips for driving in Marrakech cover the city's quirks.

In the mountains

On long descents like the Tizi n'Tichka pass, do not ride the brakes. Use the manual or low-gear mode (often marked M, L or with +/-) to let the engine hold the car back.

Fuel and parking

On the motorway, cruise control (where fitted) makes the long, straight A7 stretches to Casablanca or Agadir very relaxed, but keep an eye on the 120 km/h limit, as radar checks are common. On national roads, overtaking lorries on a climb is easier with an automatic's kickdown; still, only overtake with a clear, long view ahead.

Modern automatics are reasonably economical. When parking, always put the selector in P and apply the handbrake, particularly on sloping streets.

Book your automatic early

Tell us your dates and that you need an automatic, and we will confirm exactly which model is available rather than promising a category. Send a message on WhatsApp at +212 606-957514, or use our booking page and note "automatic" in your request.
